Southwest Airlines will launch seven new or returning routes in October 2026, including the carrier's first international red-eye flight and Saturday-only service to California wine country. The announcement, made in February when Southwest extended its booking schedule through October 4, 2026, lands in a transitional moment for the program: assigned seating went live January 27, 2026, and the fare bundles Rapid Rewards members knew as Wanna Get Away, Wanna Get Away Plus, and Anytime are now Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred.
Here's what's launching, what the routes mean for Rapid Rewards redemptions under the new pricing structure, and where the Companion Pass still does the heavy lifting it used to.
What Southwest Announced
Southwest's October 2026 schedule extension adds three nonstops from Austin (AUS), three from Nashville (BNA), and one international red-eye from Las Vegas (LAS). The full list:
- Austin to Sonoma County (STS), Saturday-only seasonal service to California wine country
- Austin to Knoxville (TYS), Saturday-only seasonal service to Tennessee
- Austin to Memphis (MEM), year-round service returning after a previous suspension
- Las Vegas to San Jose, Costa Rica (SJO), daily year-round and Southwest's first international red-eye, launching October 4, 2026
- Nashville to Reno-Tahoe (RNO), year-round nonstop
- Nashville to El Paso (ELP), year-round returning service
- Nashville to Manchester-Boston Regional (MHT), year-round returning service
The Costa Rica route is the headline. According to Southwest's announcement and reporting from The Points Guy and AirlineGeeks, LAS to SJO will depart late evening and arrive the following morning, eliminating a vacation day for West Coast travelers heading to Central America. It also extends the domestic red-eye buildout Southwest started in early 2025 into international territory for the first time.
How the Program Has Changed Around These Routes
If your last Southwest booking was open seating and Wanna Get Away pricing, two changes matter before you redeem on these new routes.
First, fare names. Basic is the cheapest bundle and the one points-focused travelers will book most often. It assigns a Standard seat at check-in. Choice lets you pick a Standard seat at booking and adds same-day change flexibility. Choice Preferred adds Preferred seat selection, earlier boarding, and refundability. Rapid Rewards points redeem against the cash fare of whichever bundle you pick, so Basic still wins on cents-per-point math.
Second, dynamic pricing. Southwest moved to dynamic award pricing in March 2025, which means the fixed cents-per-point conversion the program offered for years is gone. NerdWallet and TPG's most recent valuations peg the average Rapid Rewards point at roughly 1.3 cents, with individual redemptions ranging from about 1.1 cents on poorly timed bookings to 1.5-plus cents on well-timed Basic fares. The math the original version of this article assumed (1.3 to 1.5 cents flat) is now a range, not a floor.
Where Points Will Stretch Furthest
Three of the seven new routes are the ones worth building a trip around.
Las Vegas to San Jose, Costa Rica. Red-eye international service tends to price below daytime equivalents because demand softens overnight. United and American both fly to SJO from the West Coast, and award pricing on those carriers typically runs 17,500 to 35,000 miles one-way on saver inventory, when saver inventory exists. Southwest's revenue-based pricing will track cash fares directly, so the value will swing with demand, but the absence of saver-vs-standard tiers means you can always book with points if you have them.
Austin to Sonoma County. STS is a 15-minute drive from downtown Santa Rosa and roughly an hour from Napa, which is the real value here. Flying into SFO or OAK and driving north burns most of a day each way. Southwest doesn't currently fly AUS to SFO, so this isn't a competitive route launch, it's a new market, which usually means promotional pricing in the first few months.
Nashville to Reno-Tahoe. Limited nonstop competition from BNA to RNO. Delta and United typically connect through Salt Lake City or Denver. Southwest's nonstop closes a three-hour gap in total travel time, and shoulder-season pricing (late spring, early fall) should sit in the lower end of the dynamic range.
The other four routes (Austin-Knoxville, Austin-Memphis, Nashville-El Paso, Nashville-Manchester) primarily serve visiting-friends-and-relatives traffic. Useful if you have the trip already, not destinations to chase for redemption value.
The Companion Pass Still Carries the Math
Under assigned seating, the Companion Pass works largely the same way: a designated companion flies for taxes and fees on any flight you book with points or cash. Domestically that's about $5.60 each way. To San Jose, Costa Rica, expect taxes and fees in the $50 to $80 range one-way.
The boarding mechanics did change. With assigned seating, you and your companion are now seated together based on the best boarding benefit either of you holds (A-List, EarlyBird Check-In, Choice Preferred, or co-brand cardholder status). The scramble for adjacent seats at the gate is gone. That makes the pass more valuable for travelers booking the new Costa Rica route, where seat selection during a red-eye matters more than on a one-hour domestic hop.
If you're earning toward the pass, Southwest's co-brand cards all contribute Companion Pass-qualifying points from sign-up bonuses and spend. The Plus, Premier, and Priority personal cards plus the Performance Business card are the four current options.
How to Book
Southwest still doesn't distribute through Google Flights or most online travel agencies. Book on Southwest.com or the app. Cancellation remains free across all bundles (including Basic, with credit returned to the original points balance), so booking early and rebooking if the fare drops is still a viable strategy. Set fare alerts now if you're targeting an October flight, and watch June and July, when Southwest typically rebalances pricing on routes 90 to 120 days out.
The October expansion isn't a flashy network rewrite. It's a handful of practical additions that close real gaps, paired with a single ambitious international red-eye. For Rapid Rewards holders with a Companion Pass, the Costa Rica and Sonoma routes are the two worth watching.
