Status: Expired April 18, 2026. This 30% transfer bonus from Citi ThankYou Rewards to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club ran from March 22 through April 18, 2026. The post is preserved for context; current strategy guidance is in the last section.

What the offer was

Citi ran a tiered 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic for ThankYou cardholders on the Citi Strata Premier, Citi Premier, Citi Prestige, Citi Strata Elite, and the discontinued AT&T Access More. Transfers from a Citi Custom Cash or Rewards+ alone didn't qualify, since those cards earn ThankYou Points but don't carry transfer privileges.

At the bonus rate, 10,000 ThankYou Points became 13,000 Virgin Atlantic points. The math that mattered: the East Coast to London off-peak economy redemption sits at 6,000 Virgin Atlantic points one-way, which means 4,615 ThankYou Points landed a transatlantic flight. The off-peak Air France business class to Europe via Virgin's SkyTeam access dropped from 53,000+ ThankYou Points (transferring at 1:1) to 37,308.

Why it was a good but not great bonus

30% is solid, not historic. The same Virgin partnership has run 40% bonuses through Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards in recent cycles. Citi typically runs Virgin transfer promos two to three times a year; April 2026 was the most recent. The next one is the one to watch.

The Virgin Atlantic-specific risk hasn't changed: Virgin devalues its award chart without notice and adds substantial fuel surcharges to its own metal, $300 to $500+ for a roundtrip transatlantic Upper Class redemption. The Air France and KLM redemptions through Virgin Atlantic Flying Club still carry lower surcharges, which is why most experienced redeemers transfer to Virgin only after they've held a specific award seat.

What to do now (April 2026)

Citi-to-Virgin transfers without a bonus run 1:1, generally a hold-it-until-you-need-it currency. As of April 24, 2026, no follow-up bonus has been announced.

Best practice for the next promo cycle:

  1. Find your award space first on Virgin Atlantic's Reward Flight Finder or via Seats.aero. Don't transfer speculatively.
  2. When the next 30%+ bonus drops, transfer only the amount you need for the booked redemption.
  3. The East Coast to London off-peak economy at 6,000 Virgin Atlantic points is still the cleanest sweet spot. The Air France and KLM business class via Virgin (off-peak 48,500 points one-way East Coast to Europe) is the high-value play if you can find availability.

If you've got Citi ThankYou Points sitting in the Strata Premier or Premier, sit on them. The next transfer bonus is the better moment.
